350 alternator wiring.

Not restoring this thing, just trying to get it to charge.

Question is; does the alternator circuit have to go through the ignition switch (two pole + start) or can I run the battery charging wire from the back of the alternator to the alternator side of the amp gauge without a switch in it?

This would leave this wire hot all the time, but I was thinking it was the way they worked and wouldn't drain the battery. Yay or nay?
