41 M re-wire follow up

I double-checked everything this morning. I had re-used the old wire that ran from the ammeter to the ignition switch. The wire had broken off at the connector; only the plastic coating was holding it together. I fixed that, hooked up the fully charged battery, and it fired right up. That was loud with no muffler and inside my little garage! One more question: When I pull the kill-switch to the run position, the idiot light comes on. Is this normal? I though it was only on when the alt. was sending a charge to the battery. I've got the ammeter back in place, so I'll get the tractor ouo fo the garage and get her running again and see if the ammeter works or not. Still no headlights, though.

It is on when the switch is on, and off when either the tractor is charging, (running) or the switch is off. It is an idiot light like on a car. With the car key on (not running) the ALT light will be on. With it running, and charging it is off. With the key off, it is off. JimN

So since my battery had a full charge from being on the trickle charger, the battery wouldn't need to charge from the alt. for the short time (10 minutes or so)I had it running, therefore the light stayed on the whole time?

My previous post doesn't look right after I read it, so let me know if this one makes any sense: The only reason the light wouldn't go out is because it's not charging, so should I have the "new" alt. tested?

I don't what type alternator you have. On mine a lot of times I have to jump the hot to the #1 terminal to make it start charging and the light to go off. Mine is a Delco 10SI 3 wire type. It needs 12V one #1 to start charging. That is what the light or the diode is suppose to do but it does not always work.

Assuming you have a 10SI delco with three terminals. Two on the edge with 1/4" spade connectors, and 1 nut and stud terminal.
The #2 terminal attaches to the nut and stud. The #1 terminal attaches to the idiot light. The other terminal of the idiot light is attached to the ignition switch terminal that is attached to the coil. If the idiot light is a bulb similar to a side marker light, it will work. It will not work with a LED type light.

On my Super C I have to run it almost full throtle for about 5 seconds or so and the alt will start charging and the light will go out. It will remain charging till at all rpm ranges till I shut the tractor off.
