856 with bad power steering, T/A

On my 856 this past year the power steering was a lot harder to turn at a lower rpm, you have to run it a higher rpm to get the steering to work as it should. Also sometimes when i am driving it at a lower rpm it will just stop like i took it out of gear then it will kick in and jerk ahead. T/A and clutch all work fine. Hydraulic Remotes and 3pt all worked fine. Although when i pressed the brakes in i could feel the the brake petal gain pressure and lose pressure but it would always stop and lock the tires up.

I herd of a multiple control valve on the front pump that is common to blow gaskets between them, but i thought before i get into ripping stuff apart i would see what you guys think the problem is.

Thanks

Classic signs of the T/A and MCV pump going out. BTDT.
Hitch and remotes run off the rear pump in the rear frame.

Have you checked the fluid level and changed the hyd filter? If you haven't, try it, you just MIGHT get lucky.

Yes i keep the level full, and i change the hydraulic filter. There is just one main filter right? or is there another?

Thanks

You have the classic symptoms of a worn out MCV pump. You may as well just pull the MCV assembly. The pump is mounted on the inside of that assembly. You can check for blown O-rings between the pump and MCV and the MCV and center housing. If the O-rings are OK go ahead and replace the pump.

An unseen side affect of this problem is that you are starving the range transmission and ring gear/pinion of lube oil. The excess oil from the MCV pump goes through the oil cooler and then to the rear frame for lubrication there. The steering gets priority on the first three gallons of flow. If you do not have enough to satisfy the steering demand there will be no flow to the rear. Running with a weak MCV pump can lead to range transmssion and differential failures.
