W4 vs H, tranny, gearing, speed the same?

Trying to determine if the ground speed of the W4 is the same as the H. Can't locate any published specs to compare.

Asked a general question about differences a short while ago, but most folks seem to use the classic view and the classic view does not bump active posts back up to the top so had to repost similar question, sorry. Original general differences question below.

Focus now is on tranny, gearing, speed.

thanks,
W 4 vs H Differences

Both tractors have approximately the top speed in 5th gear at rated engine rpm. That would be 16-17 mph.

The tractors use different sized tires. To compensate for this, the differential gears (ring gear and pinion) are different. This is just a guess but if one were to install W-4 gears in a H, the H may exceed 20 mph at rated rpm.

I am told that caseih.com doesn't list parts for the W-4. This means that the actual ratio for that tractor will have to come from an original or reprint parts book.

with both transmissions having the standard gears. All gears are the same ratio except 3,4, and the ring and pinion. Those gears didn't have as much reduction in a W4. Tires were smaller diameter on a W4 so ground speeds end up not far apart. One listing for speeds is W4 1 through 4, 2-3/8, 3-1/4, 4, 5-1/8. H is 2-5/8, 3-1/2, 4-1/4, 5-1/8.

im not sure the H coudl handle the road gear of aw4 though, just not enough power from a stock H

Being from CT you are probably familiar with MacFadden's Tractors in Sharon Springs, NY.

Next time you see Jim, ask about the H with a 9 speed that he claims would do 70 mph. Of course, that is probably an exaggeration. Seems like the tires would disintegrate at that speed.

Most of us use the classic view simply because the modern view is so slow to respond MOST of the time. I would use the modern view if it worked.

Hugh, thank you for your kind reply. If you read the reasoning as to why I reposted you would have understood I reposted it because my orignal thread has already scrolled down 6, 7, 8 + pages deep and I know no one who previously responded would see my follow up question because the classic view does not bump the original thread back up to page 1 when a respone is added, but rather leaves it in it's current position regardless and hence no one would have been able to see it.

In fact I went out of my way to find my old thread and paste the original URL so that those who were interested now or in the future could have a quick an easy link to useful information that people were generous enough to respond with.

Thank you that is just what I was looking for. It appears the W4 goes a smidge slower which is fine. Although probably hardly a noticeable difference.

dbski: I beg your pardon, but if the original respondant responded in classic, very likely he checked e mail notification, therefore had you responded to him in clasic, he would get an e mail notification of your responce from YT. Much better system than this modern view. Only problem with classic, few people ever figured out how to use it. Only value of the modern view forum is for those guys monitoring how popular they are.

My take on what you did by starting a new thread, is, in your opinion that you didn't get qualified folks, thus you wanted new opinions. A lot of us figure if you don't like our opinions, why the hell bother next time.

I agree the two systems are not working well together. I like classic as I get an e mail from YT everytime someone responds to what I said. That is basically a personal note asking me to explain more fully, or questioning what I said in the first responce. When that guy comes back using modern view I don't get that. Furthermore, I believe a lot of folks want to use modern as they don't want me to know what they said. Having said that, I firmly believe modern view is a violation of our rights. No one should be allowed to post on a public forum without positive ID and at least E address.

I argued against modern view, and my reasoning behind that was every thread with a question deserves an answer, no matter how popular the topic. No point in burying it in the thread with no or only one responce behind all others. This is a forum to help all others and their problems, not just the popular and their topics.

You did the right thing. I use classic simply because I like it better, it is easier to see if there are new posts and the sequence of replies is easier to see. If my question does not get answered, I simply re-ask it, or give the link as you did. Whether or not it gets answered depends on who is on the forum at the time. I have asked a few questions that I know some of the people here could answer. They simply did not see it. I do like the idea of the modern view bumping the question to the top, but that is about all I like about it. I do use it to edit some of my mistakes, though.

Also in the same series as the W4 were a O4 and OS4 which depending on serial # breaks came with a slower first gear and a faster 4th gear in some of them. I4 had gears that could be different than the rest. I4, OS4 and O4 are low production tractors though and parts may not be easy to find. See if this comes up the way I want
Trans Drive gears left and standard teeth and driven gears on right.
H----- W4------ H---- W4
1st 23--- 23---- 47-- 47
2nd 28-- 28---- 42-- 42
3rd 31-- 32---- 39-- 38
4th 35-- 36---- 35-- 34

R&P H 16 and 49---- R&P W4 18 and 50

Can't say I have ever used the e-mail notification even when posting questions. I'm guessing the majority of folks who respond to a post probably don't use it either. I'll try it next time and see what happens.

BTW, it wasn't that I didn't like the previous answers it was just one more layer of the onion I was trying to peel back to get a little more specific.
