Hello farmall guys I have a 1940 A with a magnito and have been hand cranking it for years now Getting older I decided to add a starter and a 12 volt battry. Always starts on the first or second turn. Has anyone ever heard tell of not running a gererator or altinator. I have a battry tender that I plug in when parked. No lights on the tractor The battry is only used for the starter. I seen all this talk on 12volt I just had to ask. Hank

Mopman,
I've got a 40 A that I do the same thing to. It's got a starter, lights aren't hooked up and the generator doesn't work. I just keep it hooked to a battery tender and it starts fine. It doesn't take much to start these tractors. Works fine doing this.

sounds good to me, less to go wrong for you later.even the 6 volt battery would be ok for that little engine and not so hard on the bendix and ring gear.from what i have seen with 12v is that it really engages hard.

i have an old farmall b that i just start with a battery. It doesn"t have any lights or a generator and you hardly ever have to charge it because it doesn"t take much and it fires right up.

Same here. I have a 6 volt battery used just to start. generator wont work so I charge it once a month.Good for at least 75 starts. Henry
