I have a 1949 Farmall C that starts and runs ok (smokes)but It dies after I idle it half way down the throttle position ratchet thing. What can I do to get it to idle at the lower end of that range.

Low idle sould be close to 400 rpm, 425 or 450 is not untypical.

As far as where your lever is set, it's not unusual for the lever to operate on only the upper or lower end of its range. That results from things like wear in the governor, a misadjusted linkage, a different cam on the throttle plate from the original, and so on. You'll find that you have the full range of engine speed, but that each notch is a bigger change than it was designed to be, i.e., you can't make as fine adjustments to speed as you could if everything was in good working order. With a good, tight governor, you can sometimes fiddle with the linkage to get most or all of the range back.

Teddy has a good idea about the idle circuit in the carb being clogged, but it may be as simple as adjusting the idle stop screw on the carb, which physically limits how far the throttle plate will close and keep you from killing the engine.

Thanks, I'll look into those areas and get a real rpm reading with a photo tac to see where I'm really at and then look at the carb and the linkages.

Thanks You have all been a great help

Turn the idle adjustment screw on the throttle shaft some to see if that helps. Your input shaft on your gov housing is also probabky worn and has some wobble. The linkage also needs to be set properly. Lots of things can be wrong remember its over 50yrs young and you will never know who has in the past played with one part or another. The carb must be ok or it wouldnt start and run that would be the last thing to tear apart, First i would set the screw on the throttle shaft.
