Still no start, it's still backfiring.

OK, I found TDC #1 with the stiff wire, popped off the dist cap, and the rotor is pointing BETWEEN #1 and #3 cap contact.

Then I should loosen the dist clamp (clawfoot), and turn the dist until the rotor points directly at the #1 contact ?

Or should I leave it alone and get someone more familiar with it than me.

ooh come on you can do it!first get your timing marks lined up to the spec.loosen dist.turn on ignition switch.turn dist. oppositte way that rotor turns.as soon as you hear that spark from the points opening tighten it down right there and you are timed.make sure your on #1 position on cap.happy tractoring!

The dist does not rotate easily with the clamp not just loosened, but off. How firmly can I grab the dist to rotate it ? Can I grab it with slip joint pliers ?

The clamp looks like it's got blue silicon residue, so the dist may be somewhat glued in place by silicon.

Turn the dist intil the rotor is at #1 position on the cap. When it starts and runs at half throttle you can adjust the dist till it sounds the best.

There may a second clamp on the back side that will need to be loosen also. Not real sure though.
