ok i have been working on the international cub for about a week now. we took a motor out of one cub tractor and into another because te other one was junk.other motor would not come up in rpms to rebuilt the govenor of another motor. motor witll rev up and down now but doesnt run smooth. when i go to time it i turn it clock wise and the mark on the pully is just below the needle and i run out of adjustment to go any further. pulled the govenor again to make sure the dot is between the other two dots on the gear and it was. and it still runs like crap after back together was hopeing someone might be able to tell me what i might be doing wrong. i dont know if its a bad mag or what?

sounds like your one tooth out on the mag.just pull it out and reposition it one tooth ahead or back as in the direction you need.get it timed correctly , including point setting and it should run ok.like one instructor over thirty years ago told me....when i set everything to spec they usually run pretty damm good.

hat works on a distributor, but not a mag.

As rustred says your rotor is off a tooth. Moving the mag dont work as they fire on TDC and moving the mag back and forth doesent change timing.

It sounds like your one tooth out. Hint - with governor and or mag out, I use white-out to mark the timing marks so I can see them better.

There is a reason why IH provided the Blue Ribbon Service Manuals. So that techs could diagnose a problem and correct it the right way and without by guess and by golly. Lucky for Cub owners, we have virtual access to those tools. :D So print out the sections that are pertinent and take them with you to the Cub, it will be far easier to conduct the diagnostics.

I would suggest that you have a read in the GSS-1007 Engine. I would read the sections closely that deal with GSS-1007 - Page 24 - Timing, GSS-1007 - Page 33 - subsection 25. Check and make sure everything listed here is at spec on your engine. Then and only then should you monkey with that mag.

Once you have eliminated the Timing Gears/Governor as the source of the fault, then I would suggest you read the GSS-1012 - Electrical Equipment Service Manual. Pay attention to what is discussed in Ignition System - Magneto - Pages 3 to 7. Get everything up to snuff according to this section and you should be good to go.

Very little can go wrong with mags.. generally although I have had a couple of bad ones the last little while. A bad mag is an unlikely culprit.
