IS IT POSSIBLE TO TAKE THE ORIGINAL GENERATOR OFF & INSTALL AN ALTERNATOR INSTEAD,& IF SO WHAT IS BEST WAY OF DOING THIS? I SEE THAT THER IS AN ALTERNATOR PART # TG-59 THAT IS LISTED UNDER 460 PARTS,BUT DO YOU NEED TO ADD RESISTORS & ETC.

Yes, you can put an altenator instead of a generator. But you will need to do some re-wiring and will need to by a voltage regulator for that type of altenator. I cannot think of the wiring diagram off the top of my head. It can get a little fuzzy doing the wiring.

An alternator will be fine. Delco 10SI is a good model. Use the system shown, and all is well. Diode, light, or resistor in the circuit to the ignition key for exciting voltage will work.
If it is already 12v, no changes to the ignition should be needed. Swap the polarity of the ignition coil to negative to the distributor, and swap all terminals on the amp meter to make it read correctly. JimN

The 460 came negative ground from the factory. There should be no need to reverse the leads at the coil and amp meter.

the altenator should have the voltage regulator built into it, and the fatory one will be no longer needed

Auto Zone carries a Delco 1 wire hookup alternator. The only wire needed is from alternator through your ammeter to battery. Nice, simple, and lifetime warranty. If you get a knowledgeable parts person, they'll know right what you are talking about. If they ask what year your 460 Farmall is, ask for a different parts guy. Good luck.

I agree. One-wire alternator is the ONLY way to go. Do not listen to the purist that say that a 3-wire 10si Delco is better than a 1-wire. A 1-wire is just a modified 10si. With a 1-wire there is a little quirk though. Once started and warmed up, you have to crack the throttle a little to get it to start charging. Once "excited" it will charge until the engine is stopped. I would swap the amp meter for a voltmeter if going to an alternator. Just remember to use a 10-8 gauge wire for the alternator, they produce MUCH more current than a generator.
