Super C Runs good then quits after warm

I rebuilt my Super C about 5 years ago and it's been running great ever since. Recently I have this problem where it runs good for about 20 or 30 minutes and then starts spitting and sputtering under load and continues to get worse and worse till it quits altogether and you can't start it back up till it cools off. It'll just crank and crank and crank till the battery is dead without starting. Give it a couple hours and it's good to go again for another 20-30 minutes and the cycle repeats. Anyone had this happen before and can provide insight to whats going on? I'm guessing electrical but not sure where to start. Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Just had the same problem with a H with a magneto. I had changed out everything in the mag and it still quit after warm. Turns out I had the points set wrong. Think I had tried to set them with the mag on the tractor.Big mistake. Anyway it starts instantly now that the points are right, even when really warm. If your points are right, it probably is the coil in the mag if yours has a mag. Good luck, YC

Replace condensor 1st, cause it's cheap and could be the problem. If problem persists, it's probably the coil. Had same issue with my Super M.

Alright a little update. It's not the coil or the condensor or the points or the gas cap. Tried switching everything out and leaving the gas cap right off altogether and still does it. Not only that but once it quits and won't restart it still has spark! So the only thing I can think of is maybe the rocker arms are out of adjustment? I find this to be highly unlikely though. And why would something in the carb make it quit only when warm and not restart till cool? Any more suggestions?

Well it wasn't the rocker arms they were all dead nuts! Cleaned the carb and it's all better now. Still doesn't make any sense to me why it would quit once it got warm but I'm not going to argue. Working good again. Now to take care of some of the other little issues with it. Thanks to all that provided insight.

Josh: You may have had a couple of issues, maybe more than a couple. In all my years with these, coil was the only one affected by warm up heat. Gas problems will usually let it start again in 5 min, or less. Points, condenser, rotor and cap usually stop tractor, cold or warm. Loose and worn distributor shaft can stop a tractor, but it will usually fire right up again.

What I'm suggesting is if all other factors were perfect, coil might not have acted up for another six months. You may have corrected enough to stave off coil a few months, however don't be surprised if it comes back to haunt you.
