H alternator belt installation

How do I install a new belt on the alternator pulley of my Farmall H? It's behind the fan belt. Do I have to take off the fan belt to do this? If so, is that hard to do?

Thanks for any insight for this newby at tractor repair.

You may get lucky and just have to loosen up the fan belt then work it pass it but most of the time you have to take it off. The water pump fan hub has a lock screw and nut on it. You loosen or remove that screw and with a brass draft punch you tap it to loosen up the belt then remove.

If the pulley is really frozen you might be able to pry the belt off. Final option is to cut it and replace both belts...

Soak the front of the pulley with PB Blaster or other penetrating oil a day or so before ya give er a few wacks. Make sure you get the lock screw out. the pulley will open up and you should have enough slack to feed it off the crank pulley. Good luck.

no you dont have to remove the fanthe way i did it was stick a bolt in the belt and bump the starter over until the belt ligned up, my memory is not serving me the best but i know i did it without removing the fan. if i was at my H i could tell you in 2 seconds, care to post a pic to refresh my memory?

ok now i remeber heres how i did it

Put a bolt in the fan pully and bumped the starter then pried that belt off slip cut the old alt belt off then slip the new one on over then fan and crank belt then put the fan belt half way on and bump the starter to get it back on and then put your alt belt on, lickety split takes about 10 minutes tops
