Farmall C carburetor problem

I have never posted here before and not sure what I am doing. I recently bought a Farmall C. It won't start unless you use starting fluid and then it runs ok until you shut it off. It will not start without using starting fluid, even when warm. The carburetor is a Walbro, I never heard of one before. My question is, is this the proper carburetor for the C, and could that carburetor be the source of my starting problem. Thanks for any reply's.

I have no records of that carburetor being used on the C. The ones I show are the Marvel TSX-319 and the Carter UT-733-S. There were some Zeniths used also. If the carburetor you have works good once the tractor is running I would look into the choke on it. Usually when you have to spray gas or starting fluid in it's getting too much air when you try to start it. Make sure the choke plate is closing tight. Make sure all the shaft seals are good so it's not pulling extra air in around the shafts. Resrtictions may be restricting the gas flow inside the carburetor.
It may need a good cleaning.
The main problem you are having is too much air and not enough gas when you try to start the engine.

It could also be valve adjustment, but Jeff has a good idea for the first and easy thing to check out.

The other common places for air leaks are at each end of the manifold -- where it joins up to the head and where the carb mounts on the bottom. Those can usually be fixed by either tightening up anything that's loose or replacing a deteriorated gasket. Worst case is a rusted-through manifold, which can sometimes be repaired but often is easier to just replace.

The easiest way to test for leaks of this type is to get your tractor started however you have to, and let it idle. Before it gets too hot, take your starter fluid and spray around the places where it might be leaking. If it picks up speed any, you've located a leak.

The new replacement carb on my JD 140 garden tractor is a Walbro, and I can tell you they are a POS carb. It will run, but I have to keep adjusting as the engine warms up and after it gets hot, I might as well shut it down and start over. I can run it about 30- 45 minutes and then it needs to cool off. Old carb ran fine until it wallowed out the bushings and even then maybe ran better than the Walbro.
