Well,I did notice the coil was warm to the touch, went back to the website and checked old posts ---- I had the coil wired backwards.

New battery is installed + ground, now the coil is wired with distributor (points) wire to the + on the coil, - coil post to the ign switch wire.

Still no start. Slight burst of ether in the breather tube, Still no start.

Options ?

There are tons of archives on this subject.
First of all start at basics and make absolutely sure you are wired correctly.
If no kick at all, start at the plugs for spark and work backwords.
If no spark check components - auto zone, motor electric shop etc will be happy to check mag and coil.
If you are getting spark and still no kick do a compression check - your thumb on the sparkplug hole will do for a start.
if you got air, fuel, compression and spark it has to fire.

Spark? Pull the coil wire out of the dist cap. Use a piece of tape to hold the cap end about 1/8" away from the engine block. Next open the cap and use a thin screwdriver to gently open the points. This should make a nice fat spark jump at the wire. if the points are open already, use the tip of the driver to bridge the gap making and breaking the connection. If spark, go on, if none check the points connection to the wire goint to the coil, it could be grounded in the housing (common). Now lets check the initial timing to see if things are even close. To do this pull #1 (close to radiator) plug and rotate the engine (ignition off) till compression begins to blow out the plug hole. (put your thumb in it to be sure).
then use a stiff 8" long copper wire in the hole to feel Top Dead Center wire moving up till it just stops)while turning the engine with the fan blades or hand crank, not the starter. At TDC the rotor must be pointing to the cap position of #1 cylinder. If it is not, make it so. JimN

Have checked to see if you have battery voltage
to the coil? With the points open and the ignition switch on you should have battery voltage on both terminals on the coil. Use a volt meter or a test lite. If there's no voltage present you need to check back at the ignition switch for voltage. Should have a wire feeding the switch battery voltage. If there's no voltage to the switch you need to trace the feed wire to see if its broken. You can run a separate wire from the battery to your coil and see if it will start. This will bypass your ignition switch. Hal

The last time I put points in my IH 140 it would not crank or fire. I had the condenser terminal touching the distributor housing some place grounding everything out.

It was 2 years ago and I don"t remember exactly what it was touching.
