How many shims for a belt pulley?

Between the belt pulley drive housing and the bearing cage there are shims for the belt pulley. In the parts guide it shows 3 shims, in succession, heavy, medium, and light. Tonight I pulled apart those shims to clean them and I found a total of [b:47d9c4066c]SIX[/b:47d9c4066c] shims! 1-Heavy, 1-medium, 4-light (best I can determine).
Gordo told me I could pull a shim off if a particular spot was getting worn on the gear teeth. Well, I don't see [u:47d9c4066c]any[/u:47d9c4066c] wear.

So, why were there 6 put on? Why do I need any shims? Should I put only the 3 on that the parts book shows, or should I put all 6 back on? I'm putting sealant between each shim to prevent it from leaking again. So maybe the sealant will make up for half the shims width?

six where used because thats probably what it took to get the proper backlash on the gears.use what it had and go from there.if the backlash is to great from wear then you could remove as needed.

Can you explain what backlash is?

This will be for a show tractor, so I can't think of a reason it will actually be ever hooked to a belt. But, you never know.

Backlash is the amount of play between the two gears. That how much one gear rotates while you are holding the other one steady. So if you have the two gears in position and you hold the one still. Than by using a dial indicator you find that when you rotate the other gear you have a backlash of say .015. That means the gear rotates .015 from left to right or vice versa before the teeth make contact once again. So again its the amount of freeplay within the teeth of two or more gears.

Here this video should sort of show what Im trying to say.

mike, since everything on your h is a new adventure for you why don't you go to ebay and buy an i.t. manual for the tractor. it will explain every thing from the front to the back or better yet call binder books and get a copy of the ih service manual for an h.

Mike, I don't think I would use the RTV between all the shims and the mount and the cover. That's 8 layers of RTV and there really are not enough bolts on the pulley to really torque it up all around the surface. I haven't done one but if I was doing mine I would use that copper spray (for heads) on the shims, And some RTV on the main mount surfaces. They are real thin and should marry up to eack other well. I hope you laid them out in order and didn't mix them up.They would have a "set" to them and will fit much better if they go exactly where they were before.

I'd put back the shims just the way they were when you took it apart. As others said the shims are to adjust the gears for proper contact. The parts book just shows the three thicknesses that are available. The actual number varies according to the need. If you use RTV or whatever, it will affect the adjustment, because it will take up space. If you want to use some sealant there, get some spray on gasket sealer. However, best probably to not use anything. If you clean everything up well, and then assemble, the shims are soft enough to seal so it won't leak. I did my I-6 a couple years back and it does not leak.

The shims you took off need to go back on they were put there for a purpose to set the backlash and need to be there.

I vote with the rest in reinstalling all spacers.
Additionally make certain the oil return holes and notches are aligned.

Why do ya'll hate on people for asking questions? I am sure MikeCA has a manual or two. He has done too much to his H not to. I have an IH parts manual, I&T manual, IH opertators manual, and EVERY Blue Ribbon Service manual for my Farmall 504. Sometimes I still have to ask some questions time and again.

I am an Industrial Multi-Craft Maintenance Tech by trade. I have been around a lot of manufacturing equipment as well as growing up farming. I agree on the copper spray where you think it needs it and RTV for the outer housing only.

Good luck MikeCA,
