How can I check an Ammeter for proper operation?

I have an old ammeter that I want to sell. My tractor isn't running, so how can I check the ammeter to make sure it's good?

Take a headlight bulb, (voltage does not matter) and touch one pole of the amp meter to one terminal on the bulb. attach a jumper wire to the other terminal of the amp gauge. touch the other bulb terminal to a battery terminal (on the battery), and the jumper lead to the other terminal on the battery. This should light the light, and make the needle move (direction is not important). A 12v bulb on 12v, or 6v bulb on 6v battery is best. The meter will move between 2 and 6 amps depending on the bulb. (don't connect a 6v bulb to 12v) JimN
