Water jacket plate leaking around bolt holes

I just put in a new water jacket plate and gasket, and i noticed tht its leaking ever so lightly out of a couple bolts, should i just keep tightening them up more, should i tighten when the motor is hot??. I did not use a torque wrencH on the plate? should of of?? thanks

I've got a similar problem with one of my bolts. I was going to remove and replace the gasket (I figured removing the current one will ruin it) and I was going to go crazy with the black gasket goop I've got. I think I used some before, but maybe not enough, and maybe not in all the areas it needed, like close to the bolts.

If at first you don't succeed... cuss.

What rustred says. I don't remember if that gasket is cork, if so excessive tightening will probably make it leak more because you are compressing it too much and also bending the plate. It's probably not cork as it's water, most cork is used for oil. If it's leaking it may be bent already. If what rustred says does not work, remove, straighten and use another gasket, along with the silicone. As to the rest of the gasket, I have had good luck with copper coat. I don't use a torque wrench on lightly tightened bolts.

Do the leaking bolts go through the gasket? If so you probably need to replace the gasket. Apply a thin coat of silicone to both sides, being careful to go all the way around the bolt holes. If the bolts are exposed to the water they probably are supposed to have rubber washers. You can make rubber washers out of grommets cut in half.

Don"t "go crazy" with it: the excess will just ooze out and plug things up. Apply a thin coat to the casting over the entire area that will be contacted by the gasket (be sure and go all the way around every bolt hole) and press the gasket on. Then do the same to the entire gasket, again being careful to go all the way around the bolt holes.

This was a brand new plate and new gasket, not cork type, but its not leaking around the gasket that meets the side block, its a little dribble around the bolt heads, i used a flat washer on each bolt as not to compress it unevenly, but, it has ever so little leak on a couple of bolts, maybe i am being to picky, perhaps it will form rust and stop it?? lol. I was told by the dealer DO NOT use any compound on it???? before i installed the set, now i am thinking he was wrong!!!

Well, it worked for the manufacturer in the factory under ideal conditions with all new parts (of course, on some modern machines they use nothing but compound...).

I think it is partly a reaction to the fact that some mechanics will gob on enormous blobs of goop, doing more harm than good. I"ve always used a thin coat of silicone on each side of any gasket exposed to water and had good results.

First be sure both surfaces are smooth and clean. Use some Permatex spray type gasket shellac on both surfaces, put the gasket in and bolt it down. I use it and it works well.

My first action to try to fix this would be to remove one of the bolts that is leaking. Get your air nozzle and blow it out WELL! Nice and dry. Then insert nozzle of Permatex RTV in the hole and shoot a small amount of sealer in the hole. Then reinstall the bolt. Let it set up overnight. If this cures that one then do the rest. If not, remove the plate and start over.
