Question on 12V conversion

I have an H and an A that both were purchased with 12V conversions already complete and working well. However, both either replaced or by-passed the original electric box for the amp meter, light switch, and ON/OFF button.

Here is my question: Are the original components usable at 12V? I am thinking the amp meter might be ok, and the ON/OFF button, however, I am most concerned with the light switch. Also, neither one has the lights working or hooked up, so I know I will have to use 12v bulbs in the lights.

Anyone know for sure or have thoughts?

The ammeter and both switches will handle the 12v just fine. Of the three, the only one I've ever had a look inside of is the light switch, and it it's made of plenty rugged stuff. It's basically just an irregular shaped disc (plenty heavy enough for more than 12v) that makes and breaks circuits as it turns.

(Only hint I can give is that, no matter how well you think you've cleaned it after it's been sitting in that box unused for how many years, the resistors on the back of the switch will smoke when you first put it to use. You won't be using the field resistor on the 12v system, but the resistor that cuts in for the (D)im lights will heat up and burn off any residue on the wire and insulatio. You'll think you're about to burn the tractor down, but is' just burning off residual crud. It bears watching, of course, but after a few minutes and a few cycles on and off, it will have cleaned itself up and never bother again as long as it's used now and then. If you'd rather avoid that anxiety, external_link sells the light resistor (the one with the cloth insulation that looks like it was wound three or four turns around a pencil) new.

The only thing here is that the org. Amp gauge is only a 20 amp gauge and if you have and alt. on it when she goes into full charge depending on the amp rating of the alt it will peg the gauge and i have seen them stick the needle . The light switch will take it as the higher the volts the lower the amp.'s
When i make a change from a 6 to a 12 i replace the main wire from the gen to the amp gauge and from the amp gauge to the starter switch with a 8 ga. wire as the old 10 ga. will work but i feel better with the bigger wire
. But i am the type of guy that when fabbing something if 3/16ths would work then 3/8ths is better .
