PTO shaft oil seal replacement

I'm trying to replace a leaking oil seal on the PTO shaft on my 1941 M Farmall. I've removed the shaft assembly from the rear. Ive removed the shift fork and related parts. I,ve removed the outer tube from the shaft. the only things left are the shaft and the housing. When I try to slide the shaft out of the housing, in either direction, it hits something solid and won't go any farther. I don't want to force it without checking with you guys first. How do I get the shaft out of the housing so I can replace the seal? Thanks for all your help. Gmercer, Spearfish, SD

You can pull the seal out without taking anything else apart. Put a screw or two in it and try to pull it out with vice grips. If you pull the screws out, you can carefully dig it out--just don't scratch the housing around the seal. Then clean the shaft and the area where the old seal was, oil the seal, carefully slide it over the shaft, tap it in evenly with a piece of wood of some sort.
