Belly Mower for IH 140

Can a good running 140 handle a 72" woods belly mower or should I get a 60" instead? I am about to buy a place I can finally justify putting one on the tractor for cutting the grass in the yard.

I have a 4610 Ford with a 6" Bush hog for the other 16 acres.

I just don"t want to buy the larger Woods mower to find out its to big for the brumida grass yard which is mostly flat. I also assume this will need an overrunning clutch added to the PTO.

Thank you for any advice.

The belly mower will not need the over-running clutch. Those 3 small blades just don't get enough momentum going to need it. I've got a 72" on a Farmall H and the mower belt will slip before the engine ever pulls down. The H is rated at 26 horsepower on the PTO. I'm guessing your 140 is somewhat close to that, so the 72" mower shouldn't be a problem so long as you don't let the grass get too tall before you cut it.

You can use a 6ft easy if an A or B can use them so will the 140. NO over running clutch on a Woods belley mower as the 140 will use the belt pulley drive. Arts Way will use the same drive. A overrunning clutch does not work with the pulley thats used to drive the mower . You dont even need the clutch with the belley mowers.

David: I have a 60" Woods on my Super A, with belt so tight you could pick a note on it, Super A would burn the belt before it would drag engine down. I have to be quite careful as blades get dull, first thing I notice is pulley sheaves getting hot. When that happens you know it's slipping.

I wouldn't be a bit afraid to put a 72" mower on either my SA, 130 or 140. Keep the blades sharp and your belt will last for years. I bought my first new belt 4 years ago, old one was looking little tired. It still went 3 more years.

The 140 will easily handle the 6 ft woods mower. You should be able to mow fairly high grass in second gear. If the ground is rough, 3rd is too fast anyway. You can do tall stuff in 1st.

I agree with the others--- a 140 should handle a 72" woods mower with no problem. For over 10 years my brother and I mowed the township cemetaries and 2 churchyards (3-plus acres each) with a Farmall A with a U? 306 mower mounted on it. The mower mounting was all homemade and blackmith rough, but it worked great! Whoever mounted the mower on it used the big cast pulley that mounted on the regular 540 PTO shaft and the thing mowed like a gang mower--- very even. I always suspected that it was due to the blades turning faster due to that huge pulley. One thing you had to watch in close quarters when pushing in the clutch was its tendency to move you into a fence or other obstruction if you didn't bump the transmission into neutral--- I hate to argue with Rusty, but this particular animal could've used an overrunning clutch. We still use the thing now some 30 years later. I'll post some pics of it after our tractor show is over tomorrow.
