Rebuild cylinder head?

How can you tell if a Farmall M cylinder head needs to be rebuilt? The head has original valves. One of the exhaust valves had carbon build on the underside (faces the head) but the others look ok. The valves seem to seat well and you can feel a little play in the guides but not much. The engine was smoking but I have confirmed that I need rings. I appreciate your help.

The valves are sealing OK if the compression is good. There is probably some wear on the guides, which will also cause oil consumption. I do not know what type of valve seals it has. It would be prudent to go through the head if you are replacing the rings.

If you're going to rebuild the bottom side (new rings) have the top side (valve job) done also.

The new rings will create more compression and you don't want to loose it with old or leaky valves. Let a lone with worn valve keepers that may let go and drop a valve on top of your piston.

Just take the head and lay it on it's side on the work bench and pour some ATF in the intake and exhaust ports and see if it leaks by the valves. It most likely will!

if you have the head off the best way is to remove the valves and this way you can look at how the valves are seating and look at the seats them self and see if they are pounded out and need to be reground or replaced.same with the valves may need to be replaced if wear on steams and valve face is to thin. also guides will most surely have to be replaced. head will need to be checked for cracks before work commences. the average person does not even know what to look for unless your experienced in this field. when you take it to your machine shop they will inform you what the head will require. i have seen them use up 500.00 , but you have a good as new head.

The one valve with the carbon buildup is not seating at all so your going to have to do something with it. If you really want to go cheap maybe you can scrape the carbon off and reseat it with lapping compound but a "head job" would be the best option for you. If you can feel wear in the guides that means they could use some attention too.
