my A started getting harder to steer. I pumped grease into the zerk on top of the steering unit. Nothing! pulled the plug next to the zerk and shot grease in there. Nothing! still hard. finally pulled the plug that apparently is the drain and about 1/2 cup water came out. any ideas? suppose it's rusted that badly?

I would venture to guess the bearings are going bad in your steering gear. The originally held oil. We run grease in ours. We keep it inside as well.

Greg: Grease will only work if the gear box is pumped full from the beginning. It takes 3 plus cartridges. Having it full creates a situation whereby new grease added must go to bearings and gears. I grease mine everytime I grease the front end.

A few days ago Mike in CA talked about corn head grease. Is it a heavy fluid or a very mobile solid. I was used in the steering box on a H. I would like to know more aboutit Henry

Henry: Corn head grease is a very mobile solid, John Deere being the best source. Personally I can't see much difference in corn head grease and Esso Moly.

Jack the front up. I would remove the tie-rod ends so i could tell where the hard steering is coming from. Probably the spindles arent getting grease at the bottom. With the wt off you should be able to get some grease to come out the bottom. This is usually the case when the A gets hard to steer.
