I-H 8 Burr mill (Belt driven)

Hello, Does anyone here have literature on an early 8" I-H Burr mill. I am trying to restore to full operational condition, my old burr mill and have a few restoration related questions. If you won a complete unit, I would like to talk to you also. One question, that comes to mind, what is the original color scheme?

Does it look like this one?

Have more pics if it helps.

Hello Stony Jim, Nice pictures, I hope to get mine in shape like the one in the pictures also. My 8" Burr mill has the rectangular hopper not the round style. For now I will run mine off a tractor pulley, but hope to locate a 4-5or 6 hp hit and miss engine, in the future.

Here is a photo of my McCormick Feed grinder. I suspect yours is similar. Mine is a an 8 inch type B. There was also a Type A and a type D and they came in 6, 8 and 10 inch size. The B is designed to grind ear corn but will also grind shell corn or small grain. These are only for livestock feed, not to make corn meal, etc. They do not grind fine enough for that. The type A is for shell corn only or small grain. The type D has a shredder between the hopper and the grinding mechanism to allow it to grind ear corn that still has shucks on it. I've never seen one of those, but have seen several of the A and B type in addition to mine. I do have a manual as well as parts info. There were many different configurations for the feed screw that is in the bottom of the hopper and also many different grinding plate configurations. The maximum speed to run these is 1000 rpm, but they work better at about half that. Maximum HP for the 8 inch is around 10 HP. I have run mine with a 6 HP IH engine with no problem. Now I usually use my Cub, but I have a small 6 inch pulley for the Cub. Still turns it faster than I would like.

Hello Haas,
Thanks for your picture and brief examination. Is it possible to buy a photo copy of your literature? Are your colors correct? Mine shows green in several locations. Is your hopper original? I need to build one as you can tell and would like measurements. Could you tell me what the purpose of the spiral gear is that is integral with the flywheel hub and also what the casting is used for on located above this spiral gear? I do not have the back bearing support bracket either, could you send a larger picture to my email so I can look that over. I will need to build that item. Is that support bearing supposed to function as a thrust bearing? Do you have an approximate age for these machines? I plan to run mine off my J-D A, until I can find and rebuild a 6 hp hit and miss.
Thanks for your time....

I used to have a 24" Williams stone burr mill that was made by Meadows and it sure made some nice meal. A steel burr mill will make cornmeal fine enough to make cornmeal, but it is better to screen it as you will have some hulls bigger than you might want and there will be more waste, but if you have hogs or chickens no waste will be involved. I had one big problem when I was grinding corn for a few local folks, Get ready for an influx of rats. Those varmints will smell it and come a runnin! Coons too! One other thing, is do not ever let your mill get any amount of rain on it while there is meal in it like if you take it to a show, stuff hardens like concrete and is a nightmare to get cleaned off.

Oh yeah, When I was gringing cornmeal for folks, I used a Mc Cormick-Deering hand crank cornsheller, then put the shelled corn through a Clipper seed cleaner to clean up the chaff and other debris the sheller made and then fed it to the mill. Clean corn sure makes a difference in the final product!
