reversing farmall H

Has anyone ever reversed gears on a H to make forward gears to run in reverse. So a loader can be put on the rear end. Have seen a lot of WD"s and WD 45"s rigged this way.

Thanks for any help

turn ring gear around and move the shifting rails and you have 5 reverse and one foward, thats how some cotton tractors are, Farmall Land museum has a super H turned around with a loader on it, might give you some ideas, good luck

Be careful with this one. I saw a Farmall M reversed this way in NZ. I think the actual change was done at the diff. It worked fine. The danger is the unit becomes unstable at anything above working speed with the tricycle wheels now at the rear. The one I knew flipped over going along the road and pinned the driver to the road by the steering column in his knee. Took a while to get it off him. Not so many tractors with loaders on around then. He did survive but had a REAL crook knee for a LONG time.If you think your tractor would not become unstable in this configuration just try letting your car or ute coast down a hill backwards. you'll soon have the brakes on!!

Actually, you also need the reverse operation rails or the yokes can be cut off, rotated 180 degrees, and rewelded.

You will also need a reverse operation frame lid. They have two shifter lever openings. This hardware might be seen at caseih.com.

Of course this only applies if IH made reverse operation parts for the H. M's certainly had the kits. The frame lid looks like a 400-450-560-660 lid. Not sure what a 300-350-etc lid looks like but they might work on a H. Just guessing here.

The reverse top from a H, SH, 300, 350, or 460 will work. The only differences are some of the mounting holes for seat, steering post, etc, but can be made to work. The underside for dual side shift rail mounting is the same on all of these. It is important that you turn the front bolster around so that it will caster. If it is not turned around the tractor will steer very unstable. Steers like it is supposed to when you turn the bolster, either dual tricycle or single wheel, around.
