Super A Surging

I just got a Farmall Super A. I notice the tractor will start surging when I idle it back. What causes that and how do I fix it?

Retcol: Does it surge when it's pulling at full throttle? Usually this surging can be cured by adjusting linkage between governor and carb. The full throttle and pulling is the one I have experience with. I can't seem to lay my hands on my IT manual. I gives good direction on adjustment of that linkage. Best advice I can give you make minor adjustments, never more than 1/2 turn on yoke.

If I recall correctly, I think it is throttle lever set full, remove pin from yoke, hold forward on both governor lever and linkage from carb, and adjust yoke to suit that position. Try that, if far off don't use it, I could be wrong.

Retcol: Sounds as though it's not off by much. That linkage between governor and carb is only adjustment to correct this. Try it both ways no more than one turn on yoke at a time.

If this doesn't correct it, governor may require rebuilding, however usually what is internally wrong with a governor creates no responce, over responce or slow responce to throttle change.

Hugh you forgot the surge bunper spring at the bottom of the gov housing. Changing linkage to carb wont change surgin but the linkage cand be binding at the yoke or rubbing the block behind the carb or weak spring in the gov or bad bearings in the gov. There are several spots that could be causing the problem but i would start with adjusting the bumper spring at the bottom of the gov housing..

Is there some way to know how far to turn the bumper spring or is it just trial and error? Is there a danger of turning it too far?

Retcol: You should do this, probably half turn at a time and seeing results of each half turn. IT does say, "Do not turn bumper spring screw in too far as it will interfere with the low idle speed adjustment."

I was right on linkage adjustment between governor and carb, and IT seems to be suggesting this should be correct before adjusting bumper spring or high rpm limit.

I adjusted the bumper spring and the tractor seems to idle a lot better. Thanks gene and Hugh for the advice.
