super m carb and distributor

Is a 450 carb bigger than a super m carb. Will i get any more power by putting on a 450 carb or should i just rejet the one i have. Also how do i know when my distributor is timed just perfect for the most possible power.

It's the same carb.

Depending on how old and worn your distributor is, you may never really know what the optimum setting is until you play with it and run it hard under slightly different adjustments. Timing it by the book may not get you the best power if the shaft/gears are worn which are likely the case. Someone on here suggested using a digital light connected to #1 which seems to make the most sense.

The carbs are identical. The 450 carb MAY however have a slightly larger venturi insert - I'm not certain.

Only way to adjust timing for absolute max power is to set it while observing output on a dyno.

Otherwise set it per the owners manual or a degree or two advanced using a timing light.

But if a timing light shows the timing is "dancing" randomly more than a couple degrees at speed, find and correct the cause. Otherwise you're just chasing your tail trying to optimize spark timing! (Look for worn distributor shaft bushings, gears, centrifugal advance, etc.)

Bob M and jaybird are giving you excellent advice. Check for wear in the bushings and centrifugal advance mechanism(worn pins, hole in the weights, springs). I believe the factory advised recurving the distributor which actually retarded timing when the higher compression fire crater pistons were used. SET TIMING TO FACTORY SPECIFCATIONS! IH paid a team of engineers a fortune to figure out optimum timing and rate of spark advance.

On a dyno or trial and error on a pulling track is the only way if thats whats going on. SM and 450 carburetors came with the same size venturi. Both can be tuned to your engine and if correct there's not much difference in my opinion. They do have some different mettering passages. IH didn't tune there engines for max. power. Max. power and a engine lasting for years of hard work are to different things. So if using higher octane fuel and just short runs power can be added by tunning.
