Farmall B Brakes

I"m new to this tractor owning business. I"m looking to restore and use a 1946 Farmall B tractor for small jobs. And I am wondering how hard is it to install new brakes on it. Meaning what all am I going to have to take off of it to do a brake job. I haven"t bought an shop manual for it yet but I am asap. Thanks for your support.

Rather than start from scratch, follow the link below from a few days ago about brakes on an A. The only difference from there to a B is that on the B you don't remove the final drive by itself, you remove it with the diff shaft housing. The brake is on the inner end. On the right side, you remove the final drive only from the diff shaft housing, just like on an A.

Cautions are to block it well for jacking and support while you're working, and be patient in prying the parts apart (the paint and rust holding them together have been there for years and might not come a part easily). Suggestions would include a look while you have it apart at the seals that might be leaking oil onto your brake drums and bands.

Do your brakes need replacement or cleaning, or just adjustment?
A Brakes

You need an owners and service manual. The owners manual gives you a fairly simple adjustment procedure for the brakes which is, I think, what Scotty is hinting at in his post. If you can get away with that I would stop there. If you are going to do a complete replacement you might want to look into what seals/bearings are involved and possibly consider redoing the whole deal. It is dirty heavy work and you might as well make it new while you are in there...but do the adjustment first. Why fix what ain't broke?

This is a page I used to have up on a website covering the rebuild of my BN.

There will be some differences, as I tore mine completely down, but it might give you some ideas about how to lift and manage things.

Take whatever tips you can glean from this page or from the post I linked below, but you should have the manual in hand before getting into the project. With some basic mechanical sense and the knowledge that the left brake is on the inner end of the shaft housing and the right brake is at the outer end, and some capacity for lifting stuff, it's not a terribly ugly job.

I just bought a band for my 1946 B from Oeomtractorparts.com and they were good qaulity. I highly reccomend them. But i would see if they just need adjustment.

Well i got on it and drove it. I was saying that i needed brakes based upon the way the pedals were not lined up and rust falling out of the brake housing on the right side. But since I drove it it doesn"t have a lick of brakes. Ha Ha I guess that will be a after hunting season project. Thanks for yall"s help.
