Farmall H wiring question..dumb question

Hi guys. I just bought a well-used Farmall H with the original 6-volt system. It ran fine until it quit today with a dead battery. I"m guessing it"s not charging and was running off the battery, but am not sure. The battery was hooked up with the negative post going to the starter and the positive post going to the starter button on the steering support. Is this right? I thought they were 6-volt positive ground, or is this what this actually is and I"m looking at it wrong? I"ll post a few pictures when I get a chance. Thanks for your help, as always.

Hi. You need to rewrite or recheck the cables. Pos should go to the block or frame. Neg should go to starter button and then on to starter stud. I think. Been a long time so might not be worth the time it took to read it. Fred

I'm pretty sure there are 6 volt solenoids the trip by ground going to the small terminal so it would be wired right if it has that one.

For original 6 volts POSITIVE ground, the batteries + goes to case/frame/ground which could be the frame or a bolt where starter mounts to frame etc.........The batteries - goes to the starter switch.

Since you had it at Neg ground you may wanna first Polarize the genny by momentarily flash jumping a wire from the BAT side of a Cutout Relay over to its other GEN/ARM terminal and you should get a spark. If it had a Voltge Regulator you could polarize by momentarily flash jumping from its BAT terminal to its GEN/ARM terminal or from BAT direct down to the gennys ARM post.

If it was Pos groud and got changed to Neg ground the ammeter leads need swapped side to side otherwise it will read bass ackwards. Similar if it were a coil distributor ignition instead of a Magneto the coil leads needed swapped i.e. for Pos gorund the coils lil - wires to ign switch and + to distributor but opposite that for Neg ground.

Heres my non chargign troubleshooting procedure

Thanks for the replies. When it comes to electical/wiring I am pretty much clueless. I charged the battery and hooked it up like it was and it ran fine. Would it start/run with the battery hooked up backwards? What"s the procedure to tell if it should be positive or negative ground? Thanks for your help.
