I bought an IH 656 sn291385 and am wondering what yr it is? Also the TA is not working and a general idea on what it would cost to repair? thanks for your help in adavance.

PS. Also would like to find a loader that would fit the same tractor, probably used would be more in my price range, any one have someone to contact, again would appricate it. thanks

Roger: Gary's first answer may have been correct. As I recall 656 has one of those extended serial numbers that include a series of numbers and letters giving all options on the tractor, in with actual serial number.

For some reason IH started the 656 at 8501 and the first one built in 72 was 47951, thus all actual serial numbers are either 4 or 5 digits. You just have to sort out which numbers are the serial number. It's been close to 20 year since I had one of these newer tractors, with the extended number, there is a formula for sorting this out, I just don't remember it.

What are all the numbers and letters on there? Someone will know how to sort it out. I'll bet Gary can if he studies it a bit. He's running a bunch of those newer IH tractors.

Gary: Read my last responce to Roger, I know you can sort this out, it you look at it a bit. I might too, it will just take longer. I had an MRI last week, Dr. tells me I have the normal number of dead brain cells for a 67 year old man.

I'm thinking that maybe the 5 on the end is an S

And hugh I don't have dead brain cells, I have CRS.

Gary

Gary: An S would make sence. Again I forget what S stands for.

I should have asked Roger which grill his tractor has. 67 and earlier would have 06 type grill, 68 and later would be a 56 type grill.

I may have CRS as well, remember the Dr. said, normal number of dead brain cells for 67 year old.

Gary, Hugh, and Jeff I appriciate all of your help, and I went back and looked at numbers this morning. On the clutch side, the numbers read 39347 and then there is 0 or an o and then RE. On the brake side, on the tag it says serial number:29138 and it looks like a 5 but it could be an S, the light wasn't the best and my eyes are getting old, my wife says I should wear my glasses, but I forgot where I laid them. Also would you guys happen to know the shifting pattern? It is not a hydro, the shifter is on the brake side on the side of the tractor. Again, guys thanks for all of your help!
