M idle problems?

Hey guys, Ive recently acquired a problem on my 45 M. When you let it sit and idle, the exhaust will change pitch from a low hum to a higher note and will just keep going back and forth. Also it will stumble for just a second and youll get a small puff of blue smoke. It will also puff a random little cloud of blue smoke while moving, but when you put it under a load it clears right up. I checked all the hardware holding the exhaust manifold to the head, and the carb to the manifold. I found a few manifold nuts that were a little loose, but the problem persists. I also tried using ether around the carb and intake gaskets to check for an air leak with no success. any other ideas?

Sounds like it may be getting oil in the clylinders from the valves.{Seals or guides may be bad}. Does it puff a bit of blue smoke when you first start it up?

Yeah Jeff, it does. its puffs enough that you can see it, but i dont see it as excessive. And if it was getting oil in the cylinders, wouldnt it do it under load too?
