FW-series tractors and exhaust diverters

Question - - My W-30 has had a muffler on it since I bought it. I am changing it now to a straight pipe to reduce strain on the aging manifold. I have seen tractors of this era with a cast iron 90 degree "turn" fitting directly on the stub of the manifold. Even my Ertl tractor has one on it.

Do these things have a noise reducing effect on the engine, or simply divert the exhaust to the left and out of your face? Thought I've seen somewhere where someone is making reproductions.

Looking for your wisdom & experience here. Thanx !

Pete

How about an under the hood brace to reduce the strain? It would be mostly hidden, and keep it quiet. From one who has hearing loss from an H with a 2' pipe. JimN

...I'll second JimN because the human hearing system does not heal itself much at all. Any damage you do will tend to stay damaged for life and all damage accumulates.
I learned this from several ear doctors... after my hearing was damaged. ag ret.

Yep. I sure get tired of saying, "what?" and others get even more tired of me saying "what?". Ain't nothin funny about it.

I have a hearing loss from an H with a factory muffler, would be totally deaf with a straight pipe.

I wear foam ear plugs on the 504. Even with a NEW muffler, it is still quite loud at PTO RPM. My father is half-deaf and said it was quiter with the new muffler... I think they are both loud and I am a multi-craft maintenance technician at a manufacturing facility building scroll air conditioning compressors (Copeland Scroll)... Nothing like standing next to a 20 hp vacuum pump for a few hours troubleshooting. When it starts to pull down, you FEEL it pump through 8" of concrete floor.

ARE YOU CRAZY!?!?!?!?!?!?!

why do you think all the ole timers that ran these things are deaf as a rock??????

i have some on a few of my original tractors, including a W-30, and its the loudest most obnoxious thing ever. i skipped wearing ear plugs, i wear the big ear MUFFS when i work that ole girl

OK, yea, I am crazy. A lot of people will attest to that.

I agree about the hearing loss concerns (would be wearing ear plugs) but did they do anything to reduce the noise, or were they only to divert the exhaust from the operator's face?

It diverted the exhaust away from the operator, and really didn't do a very good job of that depending on which way the wind was blowing. It is nothing more than a hollow piece of pipe. There is absolutely nothing in it that will reduce noise.
