584 No Brakes

Have a International 584 with no brakes. I have found that it has hydrostatic brakes but don"t know what that is. Can anyone give a lesson on operation and troubleshooting hydrostatic brakes?

Likely air in the brake system.

The brakes are hydraulic brakes and use the hy-tran fluid to work.

A quick test is to open the bleeder screws, between the top of the "trumpet" housings for the rear axles and the fuel tank, open one at a time and have someone pump the corresponding brake pedal and see if fluid comes out, or just sputtering air.

Search the past posts here, I know JimB2 has answered many brake questions on this series of tractors.

Hi, the bleed screws look like bleed screws on brakes on a car or like grease zerks. They are on top of each axle housing on the side of the trans/diff case. Get some clear plastic tubing and a clean bucket. Fit the tubing over the bleed screw on one side at a time, while engine is running and hytran is warn, loosen bleed screw and let drain into bucket until air bubbles are gone. DO NOT PUMP BRAKES. Close this bleed screw and repeat on the other side.

Make sure hytran fluid is topped up.
You may have to reap bleeding procedure again to eliminate all air.

Hope this will help

I think I found the bleed screws but it's too late today to start work. They are sticking out horizontally from the very top edge of the transmission, right? I see there are issues with the parking brake also, if it is a rounded lever on the lower left side of the seat, it not doing anything either.
Thanks Michael

The parking brake is likely toast...those are a totally separate system from the service brakes, likely was driven with brake on, filter/fluid should be changed....

You can adjust the parking brake, but if nothing is left to adjust...$$$$$
