Farmall A with woods belly mower

I have never had much luck at operating/maintaining any equipment that uses long V belts. I have had this mower/tractor setup for about 5 yrs any my only complaints are the tractor seems under powered and the belt requires frequent tightening.

In the meantime 3 questions. Where do you order a owners/parts manual?

is there a maximum number of twists allowed in the belt and if so between what 2 pulleys. This mean machine has a PTO drive pulley, 3 deck spindle pulleys and 2 idler pulleys.

Which brand of tube grease would provide for the longest bearing life?

manual was available at woods web site 3 or4 years ago. check there and print it out. belt routing and pulley locations are in it. if not put on right blades will turn backwards and belt will not stay on

I would get one from Woods they are available. It is important to have the mower mounted correct as your A if it is any shape at all will power the mower just fine remember it is for mowing lawns and not foot high or higher stuff. Those mower combinations have been on the market for 40yrs or so so the problem us something you are not doing as designed. I have had one since 68 and it works great. Get the manual or find someone who has one to help you.

The main thing I've always looked at is that the V-belt isn't scuffing the side of the pulleys badly. In my case I am running a Woods L503 mower on a Super A and getting the belt under the guard without scrubbing is a prime objective of setting the idler wheels. The L503 has a spring-mounted tensioner which I believe is different than the L59 design.

I would agree that the mower isn't designed for brush-hogging although you can cut some high grass down in a couple of passes with the deck tilted slightly up which I have done.

My engine is in less than pristine shape but keeps the grass cut nicely until I will have a chance to do a proper rebuild in a year or two. I mainly keep an eye on the oil level and the oil pressure.

You could do a compression check, clean the carb, or renew ignition components as a starting point on your power issue.

Thanks for the replies. My mower is a Woods L59. I followed the link to the Woods website and looked ar the manual. Learned that the L means left hand discharge. 59 is the cutting width of the deck. Thanks again. Now I have the chance to finally learn the proper way to operate this mower. It is worth keeping just for that.
