Tire Restoration

What products are out there to make old tires look like new again, or look better anyway? Thanks for your time Mark.

The local auto parts stores are full of products to make faded tires look better. All sorts of brands, Armorall, Meguires, Turtle Wax . . . Some are aerosol foams, squirt bottles and liquids applied with sponges.

For something that's more than cosmetic and might actually do some to retard the decay of the rubber . . . I don't know if it's snake oil or not, but Miller Tire sells (or used to) a product that includes lampblack and contains waxes and other compounds, claiming to restore the things to the rubber that the sun and ozone leach out.

A tube is also a great way to lengthen their life. I have a pair that I believe were new in 1938 with new tubes. Their weather checks add character.

Sunlight and ozone don"t leach anything out of the rubber. They crosslink it and oxidize it, making it brittle. Wax and carbon black aren"t going to restore the rubber but they will shield it from the sun and so prevent further decay.

Another thing to watch out for with old tractors is damage from dripping oil. A persistent leak dribbling on a tire can eventually eat right through it.
