400 dies,fires right back up?

Dang 400 has been throwing these little dying fits for awhile now. It's just like you shut the key off.Sometimes it acts short of fuel and pops and snorts trying to re-start,but I think it temporarily floods itself when it dies at full throttle on the plow and pumps a load of gas in there, its got unrestricted fuel flow.Ive had carb off 3 times.I use it everyday. It always re-fires,then it might run 2 minutes or 2 hours before it throws another fit.Ive had the cap off the points turning it over, and I kinda think maybe points and condenser, they are 6 years old anyhow, and the coil is original Farmall coil.

I think I would try to determine if it's fuel or spark that's causing the problem.

When it dies, I would check for spark coming out of the coil tower.

I suspect the problem is either in the condenser or the coil. The coil in particular.

Well,it always has juice coming to the coil, but there is times that I dont see the light at the other side going to the distributor, but it also has one of those little rectifier or whatever they call it inline because its wired 12 volt with a 6 volt coil.I like the original coil, but I think I'll trash it and go 12 volt all the way.I just pulled her guts out for an hour straight and no problem, hot muffler and flame out the top. They sure run good in night air.I always thought our 4010 diesel liked night air better too when I was a kid plowing at night

I wondered about that switch since its the original one,but Ive always got juice to the coil, but my 1086 does have a wacky key switch it developed last week. Its on a time delay,it waits 10 seconds to turn on fan lights and power to start it.

I had the same problem with my 400. Seemed like it lost spark. Got off the tractor the one time & didn't notice anything funny 'till I got to the carb. There was a bit of frost above the carb on the intake. First thing I did was remove the inline fuel filter installed by the prevous owner. Didn't do it for about 2 weeks. Then it started frosting up again. Quite a bit this time. I did some research & found out there's a heater block for the carb on the 400's. Attached it & have had no problems. FWIW, I did also perform a 12v conversion. I don't know for sure which solution solved the problem, though. It has been running for over a month, flawlessly. Just my $.02 - Mike

Cool, damp air, is more dense than hot dry air. That's why most diesel vehicles today run some sort of cooler between the turbo and intake.
