Farmall 300LP

I did a tune-up on this tractor (because it was running bad) and it still runs bad. I took the hood off and the regulator has a button in the middle of it. With the tractor running, I push the button in and the tractor runs great! Let it out and it runs like crap! Help please....
I looked online and see that the regulator is "retired" so now what?

What kind of vaporizer does it have on it? An ensign vaporizer is what came from factory, most converted tractors had either century or impaco model e or a model I installed on them. Chances are the vaporizer is full of oil from the lp and will need to be taken apart and cleaned and have new high and low pressure seats and gaskets installed. if its full of oil it won't let the proper amount of lp thru the system and the tractor will run like crap. Keep in mind that the tank can have allot of oil in it and will need to be taken of and drained also. if you run liquid, it will suck oil back in the newly rebuilt vaporizer and you will be doing it all over again. Ensign has been out of business for several years now and parts/rebuild kits are not available anymore. there in a company in Oklahoma that makes an aftermarket rebuild kit for ensign vaporizers, but not all the parts are exactly the same as OEM but they might or might not work. if it is an impaco rebuild parts are available as well as for most century parts. the last century vaporizer I had to rebuild, parts were very expensive, but at least parts are still available. if your local lp dealer can't get them for you let me know and I will get you in contact with someone who can.

Old School, You probably need a rebuild kit.

It is possible to replace the old regulator/converter with an IMPCO model. You will need to know what the mixer is to get the correct spring for the proper pressure. It will be either .5 inches water column or 1.5 inches WC.

I took off the inline filter (it is between the tank and the vap. I turn it with the inlet side down and a bunch of black powder came out of it. What's that? Do I need to replace it? If so, where can I get one?
If you can't tell, I'm new to this LP stuff.... Lol.

I have a 300LP that has an Ensign system on it.
Last week when I was changing the oil I decided to change the LP filter.
The filter inside the can (marked Ensign)had two part numbers on.
Purolator # was 51186
Ensign #was 62611 (as best I can tell).
I went to my local NAPA guys and they didn't laugh but they looked at me kinda funny ...
I wrote Purolator and they said they had no record of that filter.

I called my local LP supplier and he said he had an inline filter that would replace the Ensign system. My filter was dry and clean, so I just blew it out with the air gun and reinstalled it.
I am going to the city this comming tuesday. I think I may stop buy and get the filter he had just to have an extra.

Does an LP system really need a filter??

(quoted from post at 09:01:04 09/11/09) Where do you get the IMPCO model? Is there something on the current one that tells me the correct spring?

I'm in Minnesota and the supplier for IMPCO for the Midwest area is Acme Alternate Fuel Systems in Mankato. Telephone number: 507-345-4000. Either Rich or Dave can help you get the right parts that you need.

Hello Old School. I was a propane dealer for 25 years and repaired many LP systems. The Century Model H regulator you have is a very good regulator. But, like anything else, has to be repaired from time to time. If it runs crappy until you push the primer, you have a vaccuum leak somewhere between the regulator and the carb. The regulator has a diaphragm in the secondary chamber that is pulled down by the engine vaccuum which then pushes down the secondary valve releasing gas to the carburetor. . You could have holes in your vapor hose or loose fittings where the vapor hose connects to the regulator and the carburetor which would cause the symptoms you're seeing now. Make sure the hose and fittings are tight at all locations. If these all check out good, you probably have pin holes in the secondary diaphragm. To check the diaphragm, remove the top cover and carefully remove the diaphragm. You can do this without removing the regulator from the tractor. Hold the diaphragm up to a light and look through it while stretching it out. If you see any light through it, that could cause your problem. It is easily repaired. You can do it yourself. Find a Century Supplier and order a repair kit for the Model H. It will come with instructions. This would be much cheaper than replacing it with an Impco. Impco is a very good product, but, Century is just as good, in my opinion. If you need any help with it, holler at me here and I'll get with you. Good luck, you can do it. Dan

Thanks Dan! I will check out the hoses and go from there. I was looking online for Century dealer/parts and was thinking that I probably need to rebuild it anyways (looks to be original). One thing that I did notice that I forgot to mention, is there is a wire coming off the regulator that isn't connected to anything. Do you know what it should go to? Mike

If it's coming off the primer, which is the assembly where the push button is, it's the wiring for the primer solenoid. You can hook it up to a switch off your instrument panel to prime the engine from the drivers seat. There should be 2 wires coming off, one connects back on the solenoid itself for a ground, the other is the power from a 12 volt source. I don't know how it would work with a 6 volt system if that's what you have. You're welcome to call me at 972-639-8721 if you need further assistance. Dan
