H wide front production #'s

Probably no way to tell, the IH wide fronts could be installed as a dealer add-on. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

They came off the line with wide fronts if the dealer/customer ordered them that way. But, unlike some of the other manufacturers, it was not a separate model. Since it was an attachment or addon, there was no need for accurate numbers. My dad had an H where he interchanged the SF, NF and WF. He had purchased all three, perhaps not all at once, though. That was VERY common in those days.

Although the wide front was an option on H and M, all H's and M's were built and shipped on either a single front or a dual tricycle front. If it was ordered with wide front axle, the wide front axle was shipped seperate strapped to the floor of the flatcar. This allowed the tractors to be "laced" on the flat car allowing more tractors to fit on the car. Only a small presentage of H's and M's were ordered new with a wide front axle.

Nearly all the H and M tractors sent to the UK from 1939 to 1949 were wide front tractors. I have a 1945 H and a 1949 M and they are both wide fronts. The few 3 wheelers that came herh were fitted with a single front wheel. All the wide front tractors had the axle set in the rear position and i think this was done to get more tractors on the ships. (quoted from post at 08:17:00 09/10/09) Wondering how many H's came from the factory over all the years IH made H's. How many for M's?
As a kid that liked tractors, growing up in farm country in the '40s and '50s, I can tell you I [u:4dd72301c0]never[/u:4dd72301c0] saw a WF H until people started collecting and restoring them. Several Ms, but no Hs... numbers had to be low. If it was a dealer installed thing for new tractors, where are all the original front ends?

That makes sense. Actually, I was too young to remember why my dad bought that wide front. The tractor came on full steel, the rear was converted to cutoffs, and I believe a single front (rubber tire) was on it most of the time. That was vegetable country, a lot of crops in 20 inch rows. Single front was fine for that. In my opinion, all the WF does in our situation was make the turning radius larger. Perhaps he did it so he would have compaction in 2 rows instead of three when cultivating. I never drove the WF, but I don't remember any problem with compaction with the SF. I did ask him once why he didn't use an M instead of an H, as the H was boderline for tillage power sometimes. He said the M had too much compaction for a cultivator -- so he did think about those things.
