Hydraulic oil filter on Farmall 504---dealer substitution???

Today I went in to my local dealer to get a set of hydraulic oil filters for my Farmall gas 504. I was expecting to get the two "donut" filters with gaskets. The parts guy said they no longer carry the "donut" filters and the substitution is an oval filter with a pressure relief bypass valve. Well I bought it and took it home. I was just looking in my I&T IH-201 manual on page 8 & 9 and Fig. IH1310 and it indicates that the filter w/ bypass valve should be discarded and replaced with the two "donut" filters. Any bits of wisdom to pass along to an amateur?

Parts guy is right. The oval filter is a much better setup. Changed mine over shortly after I got it about 10 years ago. If you absolutely HAVE to have the donut filters, check your NAPA store, Ithink they have them.

That was back during the production period of these tractors that they "upgraded" to the donuts. The donuts were the best they had until the oval filter you mention. I got tired of changing the donuts and bought an aftermarket filter upgrade. It contains a big oval filter and a spacer plate. I have a 504 diesel with a Koyker loader and a fresh 17 GPM pump along with the 4.5 GPM hitch pump. Even with fresh donuts (14 GPM flow when new), my pumps sounded like they were cavitating and they were. The Allied Precision kit ELIMINATED my hydraulic issues. I also bought a spare filter. After a month or so, my pumps were squaling again... Changed the filter and have not looked back. Think the oval filter caught more debris than the donuts and filled quickly. This filter has been on about 8 months and is now restricted yet.
