glow plug check

What would be the best way to check to see if the glow plugs are working? Tried to check the wire connection at the end with an amp meter and got no reading, should I try something else?

best way I found is to use a test light
ground the light to terminal on the glow plug and probe the wire terminal. if it lights the plug should be good.
But GLOW PLUG SHOULD ALWAYS BE REPLACED AS A SET
if you only change the ones that are not working they and the other will fail and in the end you will buy more plugs then if you changed the set

I think they are in series like old small base Christmas lights. As someone helps by pushing the button when you say push, check for voltage to ground along the circuit. If one is bad there will be no voltage going to the next plug, but voltage going into it. A simple continuity will also work most of the time, unless the glow filament is touching the contacts until it is given full voltage. Shorts to ground can also happen, burning out several at once. Good luck, JimN

i check them for continuity with the buzzer on an ohm meter. when i have them out i check them on a battery. i dip the ends in a bit of diesel and then when you hook them to power they smoke and you dont have to worry about burning yourself.

On my 560 diesel I take 5 wires off the glow plugs and then hold the push button on and if the needle moves a little that glow plug is good. Go through the same procedure with the other glow plugs

Was trying to post yesterday, wouldn't go. Do what Lloyd says, they are hooked in parallel circuit so each can be hooked up seperately. No need to replace all of them if some are good. There are several ways to test them but this way you don't need anything the tractor doesn't have unless of course the wiring and or meter are bad.

(quoted from post at 14:12:46 09/10/09) I could not remember which series had which system, parallel, or series, Oh well JimN

American made engines use parallel wired glow plugs. European engines use glow plugs wired in series.
