Friends 450 will not lift a disc.

Hello all,

A friend of mine has a 450 that will not lift a disc using the hydraulic remotes. It moves the cylinder alone back and forth but it will not lift the weight of the disc. The oil level is fine. It is in the double action cylinder position. It moves the FH fine also. We have not tried to attach something with substantial weight to the FH either to test it although this past spring it was used for plowing. w/ a 3 bottom FH plow. Any suggestions. The hydraulics had not been used for anything other that the FH far a long time...Years.

Thanks

Butch

Three possibles:
The disk has a small high pressure (2500-3000psi)cylinder. It will not lift it ever.
The remote disconnects are not flowing pressure.
The pump is worn/weak A suitable pressure gauge into a dead headed port will tell much of the issue. Flow rating is better, but not necessary. JimN

There is a valve that you turn for running a single action cylinder. It may have been turned only half way on. there should be 2 valves, one for each remote handle.

Has he ever used the 450 with this disc and cylinder before? If not, I'm betting the cylinder is too small for the lower pressure system on the 450. Not sure what the operating pressure of a 450 is, but "back in the day", most systems were about 12-1500psi... later they were more like 2500-3000psi. If it's a 3 or 3 1/2" cylinder, that may not be big enough. Good indicator would be the engine sound when trying to lift the disc. Does it appear to change when the system is pressurized?
Friendof mine had a 4640 JD and bought a heavy offset disc. He had a 4" cylinderon it and it wouldn't lift it. Our company had at one time made some 5" limit-stop cylinders and I was able to find enough parts to build one for him.... no more problems.

he has a 2950 JD that he hooked up to it and it lifted the disc fine. But I don't know if the 450 has ever lifted it before. The engine labors when he moves the levers when no hoses are connected but I didn't ask if it labored when hooked to the disc.

The 2950 has a piston pump, probably 3500psi, a much higher pressure system. Older systems were either gear pumps or scotch-yoke and lower pressure. Today you can get 3000psi or higher gear pumps, but not at that time period... 2000 or rarely 2500psi was high in any ag equipment. If you have access to a larger diameter cylinder, try it. The only other thing, if the cylinder is big enough, would be if the quick disconnects do not match and one of the "checks" is not being pushed open by the mating connector. It would still labor the engine, but flow could not get past.

I have the same problem with my JD RWA disc. You would think that would be fine since it is rather old, but it won't work.
My MD won't lift it at all, but my H will lift is a little bit. If you back up while lifting it will raise the disc.
