What About Cuba? Just Think.....

Now that the travel ban has been lifted for Americans wanting to see Cuba, it has caused me to recall stories I've heard about the place over the years. According to reporters from nations like Canada, the island still has a lot of vintage U.S. cars from the 50's prior to Castro's takeover in 1959. There have been articles and photos of numerous '55-'56-'57 chevys - even some 2-seater '55-'56-'57 T-birds.
Hmmmmm! I wonder how many Super MDV-TA's, Super A-1's and the like might still be sitting around down there on the tobacco and sugar cane farms. Probably most went to some communist scrap metal drive, but you never know. Fun to imagine. Tractors usually last longer than cars. One thing's for sure; the big U.S. collector guys didn't beat us to whatever might still be there...... at least not yet.
A buddy of mine went to Africa a few years back and said he saw several Farmall M's there - most not in running condition.

Can't see going to Cuba for old tractors when
there are still plenty of cheap ones here.

Now if you are talking about motorcycles, that a
different story. Good H-D motorcycles from that
period and before are worth $20,000-$30,000 in the
US. You could pack a million dollars of future
value into one container. How many Chevys or
Farmalls would fit. Maybe four Farmalls with a
future value of one Harley.

Batista and his security force were always shown
with lots of motorcycle escorts. Civilian bikes
abound as well. Nice weather there for riding. Although I don't believe there is a HOG (Harley Owner's Group) Chapter in Cuba, there are lots of small clubs and shade tree mechanics who keep the old iron running with imported and homemade parts.

I don't think the travel ban has been lifted except for Cuban natives and families. There is not really a travel ban, just a ban against spending any US money in Cuba. Some Americans go through other countries but face a big fine if caught.

Good point, but fun to dream, either way.

As I am told, the travel ban for all americans has very recently been lifted by external_link. Friends of mine just returned from a visit there. There is still no international trade permitted between the two countries, however.

Mike,

Ask your friend, didn't he have to go from another country like Mexico or Canada and spend only the cash he carried with him? as US credit cards and travelers checks don't work there.

I was recently in Iceland and was surprised when I entered the restaurant in the bus depot in Reykjavík and saw a late 1940's vintage Farmall Cub. It was nicely restored and was sitting at the entrance. I never did figure out why it was there. It seems that most farms in Iceland are small and the Cub was probably a good size tractor for them to use. It was strange to see that Cub just sitting in a bus station where it wouldn't seem many would appreciate seeing it. Roger

Cuba should be a gold mine for car collectors, although who knows what kinds of engine swaps were made in some of those old 50s birds?

In my opinion, the quickest way to change things in Cuba would be to let Americans go down there and spend their money. In a few years, they'd be capitalists again, like the Chinese. Might not bring democracy, though, at least not while the Castros are around.
