Starter question

From time to time my starter will make alot of racket, this happens about every other time I hit the starter button. Sometimes (not very often) it will completely disconnect. I removed the starter and ran it without a load and everything seems fine except for alot of play between the starter gear and the shaft it rides on, it also seems that the gear is worn at the edge where it would engage the ring gear. The ring gear looks fine. Any thoughts as to weather this is a bendix problem or something else? Thanks

My 460 does the same thing, except for the disconnect. I had the ring gear reversed when the flywheel was ground for clutch replacement. I should have replaced the starter gear at that time.

My H starter gear was worn real bad also. I turned the ring gear around and replaced it during a clutch change.

I had similar problems with my 504 starter. Four years ago I bought a rebuilt starter from an un-named parts house, (but you get their catalog all the time.) This week, since I was splitting the tractor in part to replace the ring gear, I took the starter in locally to have the starter gear replaced. They said that the solenoid did not have a return spring!!!! So for four years the only thing disengaging the starter is the slapping of the ring gear. I don't think I will be buying from them again.
