Farmall 560 PTO

Hello, I bought a good old 1960 Farmall 560 to do work around the property. First tractor. Love it. I brushhogged using the PTO for a year or two, and box bladed dirt around all summer. Now, I can't get the PTO to mow again. The driveshaft turns the mower blades but has no real torque. The blades stop when you actually start cutting even though the tractor is running. It is like the PTO disks are not engaging. The PTO shiifter shaft is missing the handle so I don't think it ever was disengaged. The shiftershaft moves a little but I never feel it lock in like a standard transmission gear would. The driveshaft turns free when the tractor is off. I took the IPTO off. It is a wet clutch disk type. There is no visible damage. What are options? Thanks.

If the shaft turns free when the tractor is off I believe it is not fully engaged.

With the lever missing it would be hard to get it over center to engage fully. You would be able to turn the shaft some but that over center to fully engage the pto pulls hard.

I suggest you get a lever and try engaging it the right way.

Besides mowing without the lever to disengage when needed can be dangerous.

I would agree with IaGary. The 560 we had the PTO lever had an overcenter feature. It sounds like you have it partially engaged enough to turn the PTO shaft, but not fully engaged where you can do productive work. Also agree it it a safety issue to be able to quickly turn off the PTO if need be.

Very good points. Is the lever something standard and available like at a Tractor Supply store? What does "over center" mean exactly? It sounds like a fair amount of leverage is required to engage the PTO and it must have disengaged by itself at some point.

I would check with salvage yards for a lever.

Don't know where you are at but here in Iowa there is one Colfax Iowa.

Colfax Tractor Parts number is 800 622 6015

You'll probably need to go to a salvage yard to get a "new" lever.

When you engage the PTO you apply a fair amount of force (that why the handle is over 3 foot long) and a small locking lever holds it in place. That force is essentially applying the friction needed to make the PTO work properly.

You need to have s.n. of tractor and if possible part number of pto housing when you go handle hunting as there were three different pto's used on the 560 during its production run and my understanding is they all interchange. More questions? E-mail is open. Armand
