H Magneto problem #2

Thanks CNKS for the information.
When I try to set the mag for TDC on #1 the rotor keeps changing the position of #1 for the plug wire by about 180 degrees. Is this correct and I have to cycle the engine past the timing marks twice?

Thanks JW in NH

Yes. #1 and #4 are both at TDC at the same time. When one is at the top of the compression stroke, the other is at the top of its exhaust stroke. Another way to think of it is that each piston in a four-stroke engine comes to TDC twice, once for compression, once for exhaust.

You want to be setting up with the mag rotor at #1 when #1 is at TDC at the top of its compression stroke.

2 revolutions in a 4 cycle engine. the #4 cyl. is #1 cyl. running mate. this is a good thing to know when setting valve clearances. you watch your running mates valves to get them on the rock, and then set the valves on the cyl. that is on comp.i can check and adjust valves and dont need to pull spark plugs or even look for timing marks.just go by the firing order, example 1 3 4 2 in a 4 cyl. engine.
