I have recently been trying to get our 460 diesel runnin and am having no luck. Purchased 4 years ago, take it out once a year to start an run. This year it has been extrememly hard to start, have to hit glow plugs forever, the engine is surging. Why to hard to start. Also, it does not seem to want to drive, afte starting, it does not seem to want to go. I have been told it is the clutch, or the TA. It is never constant. One pass it will drive fine, the next it hits a hill and wont go, just hops. Is it the TA, clutch, or both. Why so hard to start? Must say I do not know alot about, but am looking for any direction. Any info would be greatly appreciated

First thing I would say is fuel filters. Any time they start to surge thats usually what it is. The 460 were hard starters from day one. Make sure batteries are good and spins it over good. we put 2 12 volt batteries in our 460 and 560, makes a world of difference!!

Thank you for the info, I was wondering on the two battery issue, looks like there was a spot for 2, but only hook-ups for one. Now there is a brand new 875 CCA battery in there and it wears it down fast. Any tips on how to run two? Any thoughts on the clutch issue? Thank you for all your help.

originally they had 2 6 volts in them. We put 2 12 volts in instead, just run 2 cables to the starter, 1 from each battery. Spins them over very good then. Never had any issues with starters or anything else either.

Thanks for the help, going to try that, checked the fuel filters this afternoon, as you thought, pretty bad. Thanks again.

I do not know a lot about a 460 diesel, but I have a 504 diesel and they are similar in size. I have #2 or so cables and a group 31 (big 12v) battery. It starts fine when ever I need it, I can even hold the glow plugs in while cranking the motor. The glow plugs draw 24-26 amps total for four. You may have cable/terminal problems or dragging starter. I also know if the valve lash is out of spec, it can cause compression problems when starting. Simple first.

There is only one set of hookups because the tractor is supposed to have two large 6V batteries in series. The + cable goes to the + on one battery. The - goes to the - post on the other battery. Connect the two batteries together - to + using a short cable.

Two 12V in parallel, or two 6V in series. Doesn't matter. End result is the same as far as cold cranking amps go.

DO NOT just buy one 12V battery and add it to the existing one. That is a recipe for a never-ending nightmare of dead batteries. Both batteries need to be purchased new at the same time, and replaced at the same time. When the old battery dies, it ruins the new battery. You replace the old battery, and now the "old new" battery ruins the "new new" battery... With two 6V in series, you can replace either battery at any time without worrying about one ruining the other.

You might be better off finding a bigger single 12V battery. Get a real tractor battery too. Car batteries won't take the abuse of bouncing around a rough field for hours on end.
