706 TA is now freewheeling

I have a 1967 706. It has a mechanical diode TA with about 1700 hrs on it. In the last week or so when you go from direct to TA if you are on the level or going downhill it freewheels. If you are going uphill it does go to TA just fine. I am hoping that this doesnt mean a total rebuild of the TA but looking for some advice.
 
I also forgot to add that the Hyd. oil light is working and does go out right before I let out on the clutch.
 
If it pulls in Direct, the high side clutch pack is locking up and driving. If it pulls in TA but freewheels, the Diode is OK, but the low side clutch pack isn't locking up. Whether that is due to a pressure problem, or a problem within the clutch pack is unknown. Pressure testing may tell, or it might not.

ever since the Diode T/A's came out i have never heard anything good said about them and myself in all the T/A's that i have put in i used nothing but Hy Capacity T/A's and ALL of them are still in the field working even the first one i put in twenty years ago , now not saying that tomorrow it will not take a dump but they have lasted a lot longer the the Diode T/A's .
 
Just for curosity check the TA linkage and make sure the selector spool is comeing all the way up when you pull the TA lever back. Wear or something loose can affect the travel of the spool. This can be adjusted or repaired. If That travel is off be sure the spool goes down to the snap ring with the lever ahead in direct. If the spool does not come up far enough it will free wheel in TA with the lever back.
