Pull starting a tractor/ dead battery/generator

6 volt system with positive ground. I don't want to buy a battery just to start this tractor once or twice.
Will a generator create enough power, that even with a totally dead battery, it would be able to get enough current to the coil to get the tractor to run? Or can I attach a 12 volt battery to power the ignition system until it starts and then remove it?
I hate to try something that never had a chance of working.
Thank you
Steve

If you install a balast resistor inline, you can use 12v to start it, but putting 12v on a 6v system will burnt things, up, and no, your gennie will not put out enough power to pull start it and run the tractor.
That is why I have mags on all my tractors. lol

Depends on how long you want it to run. A battery that does not have enough amps to start a tractor but still has some charge will have enough power to run a tractor that has a distributer. I have run them 2 hours or so that way. Eventually the battery will be completely dead. These are batteries that will not charge enough during that time period to start the tractor -- in other words don't shut the thing off until you are done. Best to buy another battery. 6 volt batteries are cheap and will usually last 2 or more years, provided you run the tractor occasionally. The 12 volt will fry the coil and lights without a ballast resistor. AND a distributer equipped tractor will NOT run without a battery-you can't start it by pulling and then remove the battery.

CNKS if you are still here, or any one else, How do you connect the coil properly? Positive ground system, which side do you apply the power.? My other tractor has Dist. and Bat. on the coil and so I can't go by that one. In the mean time I will check the archives and hope to find the ansswer there.
Thank you
Steve

That would be right. The terminal that reads the same as your ground (+ or -) goes to the distributor. The other goes to the feed from the battery.
