Seems my H has a miss, or possibly because of an issue where at idel runs fine, but at 1/2 to full throttle the H will run a few seconds, then its like the throttle is backed off, then it comes back. Any thoughts? Also, is there a procedure on this forum for setting timing?
Thank You

My H has started doing the same thing. I suspect it's a carburetor adjustment issue but I can't find the problem. I put in a new carb overhaul kit which helped but it still stop/starts like that.

Setting the timing is pretty easy, you loosen the distributor and turn it a little. It helps to have a timing light, but you can get close by lining up the timing arrow with the notch on the pulley (on the left side near the governor) then turning the distributor until the points just open.

Sounds like a classic case of fuel flow restriction. Probably inside the carburetor. Kits will not fix this. Cleaning is the answer.
It can be very hard to get the internal passages clean.

I had been getting bad fuel locally in sw virginia.I had many machines acting bad and idling funny.I did all sorts of things until my friend told me to add some octane booster. It worked on everything, and I am changing gas stations.I thought I would add this as it baffled me for a few weeks.I originally thought some kid sugared the old gal.Used the ole H all day yesterday and she purred fine.on the bright side I also discovered who was theiving my gas, crackhead across the road.I"m missing fuel, before I treated it and now his truck runs like crap too.

I don't think it's fuel restriction, I used most of a can of carb cleaner and plenty of soaking when I did the rebuild. It only happens at half throttle under a fairly light load. Runs fine at idle, and when the throttle is wide open pulling hard (uphill, etc) it runs smooth and strong.

It acts more like it's flooding or getting too rich when the main jet is starting to take over from idle.

Thanks for the ideas. I am actually wondering as I read more in the archives if I have a weak governor spring. I was reading where a weak spring will cause RPM variations. Any thoughts?

As far as timing, I adjuted it by ear some, but is there some written info on using a timing light on the Farmalls?

A timing light will flash a strobe light when the plug wire it's clipped onto fires. All you do is point it at the timing arrow with the engine running and see where the notch on the pulley is relative to the timing arrow, the quick strobe light will make the pulley notch look like it's standing still. It helps to put a little white paint in the notch and work in dim light, especially if you have a 6 volt system because the light isn't very bright.
