856 no 1st gear

We were using my 856 filling silo and the fellow running it said it lost 1st gear does not grind or do nothing when you put it in 1st feels like it is going in but nothing happens got too dark to be able to work on wondering what to look for when I get to look at it in the daylight
 
sounds like that is what happened to our 3588. Is it a bad idea to use the tractor in this condintion? TIA Doug
