Farmall MD starter removal

Any hints on removing sterter from MD? Starter cases leave almost no front to rear space plus starter body can onl;y be rotated 30 or so degrees.
Is there some trick I'm missing or is further tractor disassembly required (ugh)?

Wish I could be more of a help. I have had my starter out of the MD several times without further teardown. Its a bit like one of those chinese puzzles but when it finally slides out and hits you on the toe you will wonder why it took so long.

Had mine out yesterday. Lift up the rear little, turn it back and forth and pull the rear toward you. There seems to be a sweeet spot that it finds and suddenly it's out.

My dad said he had to disassemble further to remove the starter from our TD-6 (same motor), but if I recall correctly he also had a frame rail to deal with...

Ditto, there is a spot where it just comes. I have to take my belt pulley delete cover off to make room for mine to come out. I am not sure if my cover is factory, this may be what leads to the problem.

I've removed the starter from my MD and there is a trick to it. I also picked up a belt pulley and added to my tractor. I found that there was no way that there was enough space between the rear of the starter of the tractor and the front of the belt pulley housing to remove the starter in the future. I compared the housing on my MD to the one on my '50 M and found that the '50 pulley housing was shaped differently in the starter area to allow for removal. I switched the two housings so that I can remove the starter from my MD in the future. Don't know if you have a belt pulley but if you have an earlier housing, it might need to be removed before the starter. Hope this helps.

The TD6 starter mounts from the front. The MD mounts from the rear.

YASDNIL (from Ne, Burwell)Happy day!! The starter on my MD acame out. And yes, it did require lifting the belt pulley housing cover up high enough for the starter to clear. The good news is that there is a recess in the platform front so the starter can clear it. At first it appeared the main platform would have to lifted vertically, and THEY ARE HEAVY. Special tnx to posters Owen Aaland,Troy in MI, sflem849, Tx from Ne (where), jfrankhash and Farmall wrangler. If there are others, thank you too. Never used this before. Works Great!!!!! Keep up the good work YT
