826 stops then goes

I have a 826 runs great. Was bushhogging the other day and twice it stopped like I pushed the clutch in. I did press the clutch in then let it out and it was fine. I cut for 4-5 hours with no problem otherwise. The T/A is out it does nothing and it freewheels going down a hill. The only other difference is I was in low 4th and the shifter grabs fourth when the lever hits the housing, there is no space below the shifter. the steering works good enough but could probably be better. Should I leave the T/A forward or back if it doesn"t work or does it matter?

Bradford, Leave the TA lever in the Forward position. When TAs start going out, leave the TA in the Forward or Direct position.Do not continue to use it by, pulling the lever back into TA. Hope this helps.

If the TA is out on the low side, it's only a matter of time before the tractor won't move at all. It sounds like you're getting to that point.

The hydraulic TA on your 826 isn't like the mechanical TA on a 400. It won't work forever if you just leave the lever ahead.

If you do decide to fix it, do it right and not only replace the TA, but also rebuild the MCV, replace the IPTO drive gear, and it may be a good idea to also do the main clutch and pressure plate too.

Our 1206 did something similiar awhile back going down the road. TA was in HI and it was as if went to LO but handle was still in HI. I pulled the TA lever to LO then back to KI and it went back into HI but dropped back to LO without moving the lever. Then it got to acting like it was going to stop. I was about a 1/2 mile from home & was able to get it home.

Called our CIH service manager thinking the TA had gone out & told him what happened. He asked if the hyd fluid was full which I affirmed, had just checked it before heading home. He said he thought there was an O-ring bad between the housings and to add 5 gal of Hy-tran & see what happens. After adding the 5 gal of Hy-tran it has worrked fine. Service manager said to go ahead & run it with the extra fluid, that it wouldn't hurt & the only way to replace the o-ring was to split the tractor.

Another thing he said to check if the extra hyd fluid didn't help was to pull the filter out & see if the pickup tube had slid out into the filter housing.

I have been leaving it forward. And it is about a gallon low of hyd fluid. The left brake is leaking. So I guess I am gonna rebuild the brakes, and add about 4 gallons of fluid and hope I get another few years of use before I split it apart.

Thanks.
